Bedroom Eyes by Lesléa Newman7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() It became very personal for Lesléa as she realized that, had he not been murdered, she would've met Matthew Shepard. There was an empty chair, in which Matthew would have sat as a member of the Association. "About 450,000," the driver said, her eyes filling with tears, "minus one."Īs Lesléa gave her speech, the members of the school's LGBT Association sat in the front row. As she was driven from the airport she asked her student driver what the state population was. When she arrived on campus the day Matthew died from his injuries, she found a campus in shock. Lesléa was told they would understand if she didn't want to come after the attack but it felt more important to her than ever. Lesléa was scheduled to give a talk about her landmark 1989 book Heather Has Two Mommies for Gay Awareness Week at the University of Wyoming, where Matthew was student, five days after he was beaten, tied to a fence and left for dead. The new book, October Mourning: A Song for Matthew Shepard, is a collection of poems and deeply personal reflection on the 1998 murder of gay college student Matthew Shepard. The reading was done in partnership with Children's Media Association. On Wednesday night, GLAAD friend and author Lesléa Newman gave a reading of her new book at Books of Wonder in New York City. ![]() Private eyes with jason priestley7/6/2023 ![]() Later, leading up to the wedding of Nat Bussichio and Joan Diamond, Brandon had a one-night stand with Joan’s daughter, Lily Diamond. And even if it's the former, who will believe Hen's suspicions given her earlier obsession with the case and the hospitalization it led to? Swanson is at his best in exploring the kinship-or what some see as the kinship-between artist and killer, one of the themes of Swanson's great model and forebear, Patricia Highsmith. When Hen recalls that the man killed was once a student at the prep school where Matthew teaches history, Hen grows suspicious of Matthew-and starts to stalk him. Hen notices a little fencing trophy on a shelf in Matthew's office and recognizes it-or wonders if she recognizes it-as one of the mementos the police reported was stolen from the murder scene in the city. But when they cross the driveway for a barbecue, the potential for neighborly coziness curdles. At a meet and greet she and her husband hit it off, or think they should, with their next-door neighbors Matthew and Mira, the only other childless couple nearby. ![]() After a psychotic break sparked by the unsolved murder of a neighbor, Hen is on the mend, her bipolar disorder under control, her optimism resurgent, her career as an illustrator of dark YA books taking off. ![]() ![]() Hen and her husband, Lloyd, have just left Boston for the tranquil burbs, and things are looking up for her. The first and last acts of the play feature cocktail parties held at their home where their marital problems are aggravated by the pressure of having to keep up social appearances. ![]() The Cocktail Party concerns a married couple, Edward and Lavinia Chamberlayne, who are separated after five years of marriage. His literary reputation was built mainly on his proficiency as a poet and a critical theorist, but in the later years of his life most of Eliot’s work was concentrated on writing drama that would display his Christian sensibilities. Eliot was at Princeton in 1948, working on the play One-Eye Riley, which would eventually develop into The Cocktail Party, when he received word that he had garnered that year’s Nobel Prize for literature. ![]() |
